What is Chinese?
"You met me at a very Chinese time in my life" is an internet catchphrase that parodies the final line of the 1999 film Fight Club, in which the narrator says, "You met me at a very strange time in my life." The joke replaces "strange" with "Chinese."
The first known post with the phrase appeared on X in April 2025. Over the following months it spread on TikTok and Instagram, where users added it as a caption to videos about visiting China, being Chinese, or doing everyday things associated with Chinese culture, such as cooking Chinese food or drinking hot water. Many early videos came from Chinese and Chinese diaspora creators.
The phrase became part of a wider wave of trends, including "Becoming Chinese" and "Chinamaxxing," which gained attention around early 2026. Media coverage and commentators reacted in different ways: some saw it as friendly cultural exchange, others questioned whether it turns Chinese culture into a trend.
In 2026 the phrase also became linked to the clothing brand Children of Khan. Its founder, Luca Maxim, posted short videos featuring the video game character Dante from Devil May Cry, in which a shirt printed with the phrase appears. The shirt and the videos brought the meme to a new audience and spawned many edits and follow-up videos.
